چکیده

This paper investigates the motion response of a floating body in time domain under the influence of small amplitude regular waves. The governing equations of motion describing the balance of wave-exciting force with the inertial, damping, and restoring forces are transformed into frequency domain by applying Laplace transform technique. Assuming the floating body is initially at rest and the waves act perpendicular to the vessel of lateral symmetry, hydrodynamic coefficients were obtained in terms of integrated sectional addedmass, damping, and restoring coefficients, derived from Frank’s close-fit curve. A numerical experiment on a vessel of 19190 ton displaced mass was carried out for three different wave frequencies, namely, 0.56 rad/s, 0.74 rad/s, and 1.24 rad/s. The damping parameters (ςi) reveal the system stability criteria, derived from the quartic analysis, corresponding to the undamped frequencies (βi). It is observed that the sway and yaw motions become maximum for frequency 0.56 rad/s, whereas roll motion is maximum for frequency 0.74 rad/s. All three motions show harmonic behavior and attain dynamic equilibrium for time t > 100 seconds. The mathematical approach presented here will be useful to determine seaworthiness characteristics of any vessel when wave amplitudes are small and also to validate complex numerical models.

Among compliant offshore platforms, tension leg platforms (TLP) are referred to, as hybrid structures. This kind of platforms resemble to ordinary semi submersibles when their serge, sway and yaw motions are considered, since they are compliant whereas with respect to pith, roll and heave motions they respond more like a fixed platform rather than a floating body. This paper presents a method t...

In this article, a rectangular cross section breakwater in water of finite depth and infinite domain is studied using the separation of the variables method in regular, sinusoidal waves. Determining the radiation potentials in three degrees of freedom e.g. sway, heave and roll, added mass and damping coefficients of sway, heave and roll motions is obtained. Diffraction problem is solved accordi...

Research Article Modeling of Coupled Roll and Yaw Damping ofa Floating Body in Waves

A mathematical model is described to investigate the damping moment of weakly nonlinear roll and yaw motions of a floating body in time domain under the action of sinusoidal waves. The mathematical formulation for added mass moment of inertia and damping is presented by approximating time-dependent coefficients and forcing moments when small distortion holds. Using perturbation technique, we ob...

Influence of motion coupling and nonlinear effects on parametric roll for a floating production storage and offloading platform.

Occurrence and features of parametric roll (PR) on a weather-vaning floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) platform with a turret single-point mooring-line system are examined. The main focus is on the relevance of motions coupling and nonlinear effects on this phenomenon and on more general unstable conditions as well as on the occurrence and severity of water on deck. This work was...
